SDUT held the ninth Undergraduate Teaching Work Conference in the auditorium of the Student Arts Center on the afternoon of April 30. The conference reviewed educational and teaching work since the eighth conference, analyzed current issues and problems, and arranged undergraduate teaching for the upcoming period.
Leaders of SDUT--- HU Xingyu, LI Yuxia, SU Shoubo, DU Fangling, NIE Faliang, CHEN Shengwei, CUI Huanyong, CHEN Jing, PANG Qiuxiang, MA Guosheng, LIU Xingqing and LV Yanping attended the meeting. Additionally, presented were also members of the Talent Cultivation and Teaching Guidance Specialized Committee, middle executives, undergraduate teaching supervisors, the directors and deputy directors of the professor committees of the colleges,the directors of the offices of teaching and research,the directors of the student affairs offices, the representatives of teachers and students.CHEN Shengwei, member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President of SDUT, chaired the meeting.
HU Xingyu, Secretary of SDUT’s Party Committee stated in his talk that education is of vital importance for the nation and the Party;therefore, the core mission of universities is to cultivate talent. And the quality of a university's education is first reflected in its undergraduate education. Without high-quality undergraduate education, there is no solid foundation for the high-quality development of universities.
HU Xingyu puts forward three points of view on how to scientifically and effectively promote the undergraduate teaching of SDUT to a new level and do a good job in the coming period. First, we must elevate our perspective and deeply recognize the significant importance of undergraduate teaching. Second, we should solidify the foundation and firmly grasp the meaning and requirements of the fundamental tasks of fostering character and civic virtue. Third, we should focus on problems and comprehensively promote the reform and innovation of undergraduate teaching.
President LI Yuxia presented a working report entitled Deepen the Reform of Undergraduate Education and Teaching to Comprehensively Improve the Quality of cultivating high-caliber applied talents. The report systematically reviewed and summarized the achievements in education and teaching since the school's Eighth Undergraduate Teaching Work Conference from eight aspects: upholding the Party's comprehensive leadership, implementing comprehensive education involving all stakeholders and the simultaneous development of the five domains of education (moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic, and labor education), deepening the reform of talent cultivation models, enhancing undergraduate program development, improving teachers' teaching competencies, strengthening the construction of educational and teaching resources, reinforcing the quality management of education and teaching, implementing the student-centered teaching paradigm reform, and deepening the evaluation of educational and teaching quality. The report conducted an in-depth analysis of the new situations and tasks currently facing the school, and pointed out the existing problems and deficiencies in areas such as the digitalization of education, the alignment between traditional program development and the demands of emerging industries, as well as the integrated advancement of the simultaneous development of the five domains of education.
The report identified the general idea and main initiatives of undergraduate teaching for the upcoming period. First, adhere to the original intention and continue to build and strengthen the institutional mechanism of moral education. Second, deepen the reform and further develop a dynamic new educational and teaching mechanism. Third, accelerate the construction of a new intelligent educational and teaching ecology through digital empowerment. Fourth, vigorously improve the quality of talent cultivation through paradigm reconstruction. Fifth, through cultural immersion, make joint efforts to build a new scene of quality-culture construction.
SU Shoubo, the deputy secretary of SDUT's Party Committee, announced Decision on Commending Advanced Collectives and Individuals in Undergraduate Teaching from 2019 to 2024.
The school-leaders awarded honorary certificates to the winning groups and individuals.
During the meeting, participants exchanged teaching experiences. Three units including the Department of Student Work, the School of Transportation and Vehicle Engineering, and the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, as well as faculty representatives, gave speeches introducing their experience and practices.
CHEN Shengwei emphasized that the undergraduate teaching work conference was divided into two stages. All relevant departments and teaching units are required to promptly convene their respective special meetings for the second stage, organize the study and implementation of the conference spirit, and carry out in-depth discussions on relevant documents and the conference report.
Regarding how relevant departments and teaching units should effectively conduct the second-stage special teaching work meetings, Chen Shengwei emphasized that each department, unit, and college should deeply reflect on the fundamental question of what undergraduate teaching is, what it should accomplish, and how it should be carried out from the perspective of their own features. The entire faculty should strive forward with the spirit of success does not necessarily hinge on me, but success will surely include my contributions, translating the student-centered educational philosophy into practice and composing a new chapter of high-quality development in undergraduate teaching in their respective positions.
